Jenny Ilderton, piano and voice teacher, Lancaster, PA, shares her tips for eating more fish.

Until last year, when Jenny Ilderton thought about fish, one word came to mind: Gross! "I didn't want to deal with it," she says. But not-so-good cholesterol numbers for Jenny and her husband, Rob, meant something had to change. Enter Healthy Habits coach Allison Fishman. Together they turned the ship around, and now fish is a staple on the Ilderton family's weekly menu.

  • Stay in your comfort zone. "We started with dishes we were comfortable with, then added seafood. First, real Caesar salad dressing with anchovies. The fish really added another dimension to the flavor. We do a lot of stir-frying, so I just added shrimp. We like potato chowder, so we tried clam chowder. "
  • Find your favorites. "You've got to try something more than once before you're comfortable with the texture and taste. We tried more than 10 different kinds of fish, but we gravitate toward tilapia, salmon, shrimp, and tuna. Our kids love tuna casserole. We do salmon on the grill with just lemon, salt, and pepper. It's surprising how good something so simple tastes."
  • Share the experience. "We go out to eat with our friends and family who like fish. They tell us what's good, and we try it. On my birthday, Rob's dad ordered sushi for us. It was good, and it was cool to have that experience together. It's become an adventure."
